Tory Vat Bombshell gets dropped on Jan 4th

It's hard to avoid news of the Tory Vat Bombshell getting dropped on January 4th. Everytime you turn on the TV, there is a retailer spending hard cash on prime time television adverts warning the public that the Conservatives are going to hammer them with a VAT rise even though the economy is still in a fragile state.

We should also note that during the election campaign, George Osborne specifically promised he wouldn't raise VAT.

Here's what he said

The plans we set out involved around 80 per cent of the work coming from spending restraint and about 20 per cent from tax increases . . . The tax increases are already in place; the plans do not include an increase in VAT.

And here's what Cameron told Jeremy Paxman in an interview on April 23rd:

We have absolutely no plans to raise VAT. Our first budget is all about recognising we need to get spending under control rather than putting up tax.

This is clearly a Government Of All The Liars.

Ach it is just the start of a hell of a lot of misery in 2011. I would like to say otherwise but I feel that the situation this time next year wil be much worse.

Despite that here's wishing you a good 2011!

Hate to bring facts in to your rant but neither Cable, Osborne or Darling ruled out a VAT rise. Not even Labour. Got that. No one ruled it out, which given the circumstances meant they all were intending to raise VAT. So Labour liars, Tory liars, Lib Dem liars. Your lot are just as bad, just we are lucky they are no longer the shysters in charge.

Happy New Year

'This is clearly a Government Of All The Liars'

Are you referring here to the New Labour warmongers,a dossier full of lies and lifted internet essays resulting in 500,000 dead and injured in Iraq?

DevonChap - since when is publishing direct quotes from the Tory readership a "rant"?

Note you don't deny Labour would have raised VAT. Therefore, so much hypocritical hot air from Snowflake you risk melting yourself.

OAV is a lifelong Labour voter, but can't help being critical of the party for its contribution to the economic situation we are faced with. During the period from 1997, a golden opportunity has been missed to reinvest in manufacturing and in particular the energy and transport sectors to bring the UK into the 21st century. What happened - we continued to blow it on the pimps in the finance industry?

These people are not wealth creators, they are wealth managers. One thing I have observed about wealth managers during 25 years of trying to prepare for a comfortable retirement is that they manage their own wealth first and then mine. If they want to leave the UK, please let them go. A depleted finance industry would force the UK government to entire a genuinely radical phase of new policy making in order to refill the coffers. This might even motivate them to become honest and engage properly with the voting and working public

Devonchap - if Gordon brown had won the election, I guarantee there would have been no rise in VAT. Sorry but the Tories are out and out liars.

Alistair Darling doesn't agree with you. I'd take his word over yours. Snowflake = Assertion without facts.

DevonChap - Labour were in power for thirteen years and never rasied VAT once. Instead they CUT VAT on domestic fuel from 8% to 5%, and enacted a temporary cut in VAT in 2009 as well. We would never raise VAT in govt.

The VAT raising party are the Tories. Thatcher raised VAT from 8% to 15%. John Major raised general VAT from 15% to 17.5% and raised VAT on domestic fuel from 0% to 8%. Cameron raised VAT from 17.5% to 20%.

Tories are the tax-raising party.
