Most MPs evidently viewed the expenses system as an adjunct to their pay, encouraged by their recent low pay increases no doubt.

Deselection may be wise in some cases. However hysteria, which it seems to me flows from issue to issue at present, is not to be encouraged.

I recall the Death of Princes Diana, the Rottweiler Bill, and have read of the problems in early Athenian democracy, when populist executions were later regretted. Hysteria when we have won the World Cup, Please!

Polly Toynbee seems to have caught the popular mood and foolishly told us to act out her take on it.

No Party has a substitute for Gordon Brown. Getting important decisions right is the key, not a cut and run Leadership election bid.

Not least because the economy's turnaround and other good news will in any case be attributed to Gordon Brown, and labour will be less well p[laced to take electoral advantage with anyone else in charge.
